From Futurism to Formalism, from Literature to Film
How did Russian formalists affected filmmaking. By Gareth Buckell.
Three groups emerged in Russia in the early twentieth century that would prove enormously influential upon on the nation’s cultural and political life: the Bolsheviks, the Futurists and the Formalists. All three were crucial to the specific character of Russian Modernism, opposed to the decaying aristocratic regime of Nikolai II; the Futurists combined this with a strong reaction against nineteenth-century Russian literature, a position not shared by the Formalists or the Bolsheviks. All three groups were also interested in film.
