A PIECE TO CAMERA: VOICE IN ARTISTS IN FILM AND VIDEO
The separation of sound and image is an integral split of our perceptual immersion in the world. In moving images speech remarries the image at the mouth in ways more complex than the slamming of a clapperboard. Speech is a special kind of sound, just as the face is a special kind of image. The lips become a symbol partly like the cross hairs of a sight, except we lip-read only slightly when watching someone talk, focusing on the sound. By forcing us to see these effects artists show the movement of language.
