TOUCH ME, TOUCH ME NOT
LAURA MALACART
TOUCH ME, TOUCH ME NOT
In 2002 I made a small photographic stamp that celebrated the work of Valie Export. I wanted to create something light yet lasting, a weightless and humorous piece that could be perceived as a commemorative gesture, rather than an exhibit. This is how a series of postal stamps called Tribute to Valie came to be.
I found that quite a few people were not familiar with Export’s practice, I became accustomed to tell the tale of the performance artist, who took to the streets of Vienna wearing a cardboard box on the top half of her body in the guise of a mini theatre, asking people to put their hands through the curtain and feel her breast I had never seen an image of Tapp und Tastkino (Touch Cinema) 1968 but I remember being struck by the combination of intelligence and humour of Valie Export’s work.
