THERE WAS A PLAN

JANINE SACK
THERE WAS A PLAN

I remember seeing Braslia Brasilndia for the first time: a bus travels along red sandy roads full of people reciting sentences to the camera which obviously arenat theirs. They speak Portuguese; I concentrate on reading the subtitles to follow the dense content and to understand the references and stories, which create the pattern of the film. I am aware of my irritation because of the way people are quoting texts, which are clearly written language and how they act as if they are rehearsing for the first time. I am intrigued by how the mix of textual fragments dealing with the building of BrasAlia begin to draw a picture in my mind.
In the film trilogy, BrasAlia BrasilIndia, (2001), Der Gang der Ereignisse (The Course of Events), (2001) and Das Modell (The Model), (2003) Ania Corcilius pursues an investigation into the mythologies and utopian aspirations of modernism focusing on the question of how the idea of the Masterplan can be seen today.
