The International Film Festival Rotterdam: a quieter yet more honest way in. By Matt Showering

Over the past decade, many observers have come under the impression that the biggest of the world’s festivals have grown more commercialised. Sundance for instance, is now thought in some quarters to exist mainly for the purpose of granting independent filmmakers access to Hollywood; while Cannes tends to award its prizes to offerings from more successful representatives of their movements (frequent winners include the Coen Brothers and David Lynch).
